Review

Story
Rancho (Amir Khan), Farhan (Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi) are classmates in a premiere engineering college in India. They are from different backgrounds (one ultra rich, one middle class and another poor economic background). Dean Viru (Boman Irani) is a follows a strict regime and believes in putting peer pressure on students. Rancho is of opinion that students should never chase grades, but they should love what they are doing. The rest of the story is all about how Rancho makes a difference to his friends and proves that the dean is wrong.

Actors:
Aamir Khan looks like a teenager with young outlook. R Madhavan is good as a student who has his heart set elsewhere. Sharman Joshi is a perfect fit for a guy from poverty-stricken family. Kareena Kapoor’s role is little passive in the movie and she is good. She looks little elder to Aamir Khan. Boman Irani has done a character that has striking similarities to that of his character in Munnabhai MBBS. The guy who did the role of NRI is cool.

Technical departments:

Story - screenplay – direction: The story of this movie has roots in Chetan Bhagat’s first novel ‘Five Point Someone’ – a semi-biographical book set in the backdrop of IIT. Raj Kumar Hirani and Abhijit Joshi have taken the basic gist and a few instances from the book and penned a fresh story. Screenplay of the movie is refreshing with spaced flashback narration. You will have something to look forward to in the entire movie. Direction is excellent. I have read ‘Five Point Someone’ and loved it. The only part in the book I didn’t like is the procedure they go through when the steal the question paper from dean’s office. Thankfully, the director modified it to make it look simple.

The following parts are retained from the book –

1. Three different backgrounds for each of three students.
2. Hero falling in love with dean’s daughter.
3. References to death of Dean’s son.
4. Poor student trying to commit suicide and breaking his legs

Characterization changes compared to the book

1. Hari (Rancho) character is completely modified. The entire book is written from Hari’s point of view. In the movie, the remaining two characters narrate the story of Rancho (Hari).
2. Ryan (Farhan) character is completely changed. Ryan is a man who is into alcohol and grass. Whereas Farhan has a passion for photography in the movie. And his passion is to become a wildlife photographer. But he joined engineering college to satisfy his parents. Alok (Raju) character is kept intact in the movie.
3. Professor’s daughter character is cut down.

The refreshing changes in story –

1. The interval episode is excellent.
2. Baby delivery episode is amazing.
3. The final scene between NRI and Aamir Khan is superb.
4. The relationship between heroine and her brand-crazy materialistic beau is developed very well.

Here are the best scenes in the movie –

1. Aamir Khan intro episode where he replies to the ragging senior.
2. Aamir Khan asking why astronauts can’t use pencil and Boman Irani replying to it towards the climax.
3. The entire sequences of showing Sharman’s family episodes in black & white color.
4. The way Madhavan convinces his parents.
5. Hindi speech episode by NRI student makes you laugh uncontrollably (thanx to the funny usage of balatkar and sthan).
6. The style in which Sharman replies to the questions in the interview
7. The methods used by Aamir to make injured Sharman as a normal guy.
8. The baby delivery episode
9. The climax episode of NRI meeting the scientist.

The director seems to be still having in the hangover of Munnabhai MBBS

1. Boman Irani characterization is similar (he plays professor in both the movies) and hero falls in love with professor’s daughter in both the movies.
2. The hospital scenes (baby delivery and sharman’s hospitalization) have similar tone in both the movies.
3. If Munnabhai 1 & 2 professed Jaadu Ki jhappi and Gandhigiri, 3 Idiots comes up with another philosophy of ‘all is well’.

Other technical departments: Cinematography CK Muraleedharan is excellent. Music by Shantanu Moitra sound average when you listen and watch the promos, but it sounds very good in the movie because of well-conceived songs and their proper placement. Editing is very good. You don’t find the movie lengthy though the runtime is almost 3 hours. Dialogues are witty as well as thought-provoking.

Analysis: 3 Idiots is a movie that has both entertainment and sentiment mixed in the right proportions. It is also a message oriented film and it gives the message with nice entertainment. All the alumni of engineering colleges will have a nostalgic moment in the movie as we can identify ourselves with one character among there three idiots (for me, it reminded me of my BITS Pilani days). People in the theatre were clapping after the movie is finished and it shows the kind of impact 3 Idiots has it on it’s viewers. On a whole, ‘3 Idiots’ is a wonderful film and I recommend it to everybody.

Tailpiece:

My observation of the works of Chetan Bhagat: I never completed reading any novel in English (except for The Alchemist) till I got my hands on ‘Five Point Someone’. Chetan Bhagat's simple and plain English makes it a pleasant reading for people who are not used to read English fiction. I loved the entire book of Five Point Someone except for the episode that follows after stealing question paper. I also liked ‘One Night at the call centre’. The only thing I didn’t connect with that book is the episode of accident. It took me a while to complete ‘3 mistakes of my life’. I had to forcibly read one chapter a day. I recently bought ‘2 states’ and read the half of the book very interestingly. Book i stopped reading it after completing 75% of it. I am not interested in reading that book anymore. It is hightime for Chetan Bhagat to come up with an interesting book next time as the quality is going down gradually in his works.

This movie is so smart and bursting with originality, you'll walk away knowing you completely got your money's worth. I absolutely recommend this film for anyone who appreciates talent, and loves movies.

Disney’s 2D animated musicals never wore out their welcome. Some studio buffoon just figured that maybe kids didn’t want singing in their animated films any more. And then that studio buffoon decided that because 3D animated films were succeeding and a recent string of 2D films had flopped that no one wanted hand-drawn animated movies any more. This is why the last Disney 2D animated musical was Mulan in 1998. 11 years later and Disney, with the support of Pixar chief John Lasseter, has brought back hand-drawn musical movies with The Princess and the Frog. But this isn’t a return of Disney animation; it’s a rebirth.

Set in 1920s New Orleans and playing on the fairy tale of the princess kissing a frog to turn him into a prince, the film centers on Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) who doesn’t have time for princes or frogs or kisses as she works non-stop so she can afford to open her own restaurant. Unfortunately, she ends up kissing Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos) because he’s a talking frog prince and, mistaking her for a princess, asks her to make him human again. This would be fine (and a very short movie) except the popular fairy tale fails to mention that if you’re not a princess and you kiss a cursed frog-prince, you’ll turn into a frog too. It’s that damned magical legalese. The two are forced to travel across the bayou together to find voodoo priestess Mama Odie (Jenifer Lewis) in the hopes that she can turn them human again. The proceedings are decorated with fun music and amusing supporting characters. This is the Disney animated movie you know and love, but even better.

Before you smite me for blasphemy, let me explain that I will always love the animated Disney films I grew up with: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King. But within the first twenty minutes of The Princess and the Frog, I knew I was entering a whole new era due to the advances in animation, creative freedom for animators, and a positive message which is both universally empowering and socially responsible. It’s no slam against the older Disney movies, and I’m not saying they’ve aged poorly or that they’re secretly bigoted (although I’m pretty sure that Pumba was an anti-semite). It’s just that The Princess and the Frog has the benefit of progress combined with filling the 2D animated musical void of the past eleven years.

Prem (Ranbir) is a happy go lucky fun loving chap staying in a small town. But problems follow him everywhere even when he is all set to do something good for others. Prem along with his friends runs a ‘Happy Club’ which believes in joining hearts of lovers. Following some misunderstandings, Prem loses his heart to new girl in town Jenny (Katrina). He finds out she is an orphan staying with a heartless family. Prem’s friends motivate him to tell her his ‘dil ki baat’ and he tries all his level best to match Jenny’s choices. After a month long gap of staying away from Jenny he is finally all set to tell her his feelings, he finds her house locked and family migrated to Goa to forcibly marry her to a cash rich idiot. He goes to Goa to seek her but only to be shocked by her revelation that she loves one Rahul (Upen) and wants to elope and get married to him. Heartbroken but not dejected, Prem decides to bring the two lovers together. But complications arise further. What chaos it all leads to as Prem goes all out to make the Jenny-Rahul marriage happen, forms the rest of this fun filled entertainer.

Rajkumar Santoshi is back in form after a many years. Comedy has always been his main forte as his Andaz Apna Apna has achieved cult status in last 15 years. Here he has balanced both romance and comedy very well. His narrative keeps you hooked right from the word go. Santoshi has also picked up the right character actors which contribute immensely to the madcap proceedings. Production values are of high standards. Some scenes that have turned out well in terms of writing, direction and acting are the dance party sequence, Katrina slapping Ranbir after she feels he is aping her stammering only to realize he has the same defect as well, Ranbir masquerading in a girlie top when a girl’s parents come to see him and of course the howlarious climax action.

One of the biggest contributors of the film is its music by Pritam. All the songs are ruling the charts and their positioning in the film and picturisation make them even better.

Ranbir showcases what powerhouse of talent he is. He is not only loveable in the funny moments but is excellent in the emotional sequences. Katrina Kaif is in top form too. She balances her funny portions equally well with her emotional ones. Both Ranbir and Katrina make a wonderful fresh jodi as they share a crackling chemistry. Upen Patel fits the role to the T. Pradeep Kharab as Katrina’s suitor is very funny. Darshan Jariwala and Smita Jaykar playing Ranbir’s parents are first-rate. Zakir Hussain and Govind Namdeo are loud but funny. The actors playing Ranbir’s friends are just too good.

After a real long time a good clean hearted romantic comedy has come to the cinema halls which can be enjoyed with the entire family. Go for it guys. Watch it for seeing Santoshi get back in form and Ranbir-Katrina emerge as the new hot jodi of Hindi cinema.

Make no mistake, the sequel to John Cena's WWE action flick isn't some high-brow affair or Bruckheimer-quality masterpiece, but it's certainly as entertaining, if not moreso, than the original film. Swapping out both Cena and the film's PG-13 rating, the sequel features Ted DiBiase (son of the Million Dollar Man) in an R-rated, 90-minute bout of semi-constant ass-kicking. DiBiase stars as recon sniper Joe Linwood whose off-duty vacation to Thailand with his wife finds them embroiled in the middle of a hostage situation at the massive resort at which they're staying. When a separatist group sieges the resort during its gala opening, Linwood's wife is among the hostages and Linwood escapes to plan the eventual rescue mission.

The story is neither clever nor inventive, but it follows in the tradition of similar films by offering a simple scenario in which exists the unlimited potential for hardcore violence. But it's the presentation that really makes the film work. Helmed by director Roel Reine, the movie looks and feels hugely theatrical despite its lower budget. From the cinematography, to the striking angles, to the well struck balance between fast-paced edits and lingering, well-orchestrated camera moves, there's little about the sequel's direction that isn't more inspired than its fairly generic original. A hand-to-hand fight scene about two-thirds of the way through the movie takes place amidst a lengthy, sweeping camera rotation that highlights the complex choreography in a single shot.

Broderick plays Ben Singer, a divorced father eking out a living in a menial proofreading job and sharing a one-room flat with his chess-loving Senegalese roommate Ibou (Michael Kenneth Williams). Ben spends most of his free time railing at the world's injustices, even to his good-hearted 11-year-old daughter (Jodelle Ferland).

When Ibou falls into a diabetic coma, partly as a result of a city tow truck driver's refusal to unbuckle Ben's car even while his friend lies unconscious in the street, the main events of the plot are set in motion. Ben loses his job because he's missed work, he sues the city for "depraved indifference," and Ibou's sister (Sanaa Lathan) arrives from Africa and moves in with Ben.

While the film easily might have gone in an overly treacly direction, Goldin manages to avoid it, thanks to some unpredictable plot twists that subvert our expectations based on years of feel-good movies. Perhaps the sole misstep is the conceit of Ben's imaginary conversations with "the Man" (Phillip Baker Hall), who represents everything that Ben detests in life.

Broderick, playing a harder-edged role than usual, delivers a fully engaged performance that makes us empathize with Ben even while not making him particularly likable. Ferland is very moving as the beleaguered young daughter, and Lathan is so earthily sexy as Ben's new love interest that it makes his character transformation all too believable.
